Much of today’s society justifies different ideas through morals or by simply following the crowd. When it involves certain issues, this should not be the only way to justify one’s ideas. One very controversial issue that the United States and other countries around the world faces is abortion. Abortion has been on the political platform for many years. People believe that abortion breaks a great deal of moral codes, but this set of morals is different for every individual. Within these debates between right and wrong the star question always seems to be, “Can abortion be justified, and in what ways?”. The answer is, yes. Abortion can be justified under circumstances of rape, incest, or health related issues involving the carrier of the child. But it is merely a choice that can be made by the mother, not a decision based solely on what is morally acceptable or unacceptable in the eyes of others.
Nearly 665,000 women decide to get an abortion per year, though it is against a multitude of people’s morals. Many of which are unsafe practices for the carrier of the fetus and could possibly end in death of not only the fetus, but the mother as well. In fact, about 47,000 of the women that get abortions die due to medical complications caused by either the procedure itself or unsafe practices. Many don’t have access to abortion clinics, forcing these women to use unsafe practices. Some of these women are even turned away because of bias doctors that are unwilling to help. Several states “require physicians to provide every woman with state-prepared, anti-choice materials at least 24 hours prior to the abortion procedure”, which means these clinics aren’t really giving these already discriminated women a choice (Biased Counseling Against Abortion par.1). Instead, they put them in an uncomfortable position and make them feel guilty for making this decision. A lot of people set religious morals that very few would say are wrong. But many sensible people disprove their application to society, rape being the prime instance where these religious men and women approve of abortion. Due to the world’s negative views toward incest, the mother and child would have to live a life that is psychologically unbearable. Therefore an abortion would help her mentally and physically. In cases of a mother’s health, you never hear of a child having a happier and far more productive life than the mother could’ve had. Rather, you hear the mother’s life shouldn’t be sacrificed for the child to be left to bear such a burden. An abortion during this instance gives a mother a second chance at creating life, rather than forcing a child to live with the guilt of his/her mother’s death. The restriction of governmental support in cases of rape, incest, and probable death of the mother shows the lack of rights given to these women. “‘Attempts to stop abortion through restrictive laws -- or by withholding family planning aid -- will never work, because they do not eliminate women's need for abortion,’ added Newman-Williams”, these women are still in need of these abortions and won’t stop their fight until they receive them (Perry par.10). It is the woman's body, so how could anyone, especially the government, know what is right for her? If these governmental sanctions against abortion were implemented, how would this affect the mother or child in the long run? “Of the 400,000 children in foster care 100,000 of them are available to be adopted”, but 20% of these children will eventually age out of the system, meaning they are now considered legal adults and are able to provide for themselves independently (About the Children par.6). Though they are now able to support themselves, many of these young men and women are at an increased risk for homelessness and unemployment, all due to abandonment. This could happen to a child that was given up due to a mother’s death. In other cases of incest or rape, a child could stand as a constant reminder of a very traumatizing experience. This affects the mother and the child in the sense that they are never able to escape the toil of assault. Without this right of choice, you can see how the ability to get an abortion saves not only the mother but also the unborn child from a life completed by chaos. These reasons and many others provide the support needed for the pro-choice argument and in deciding whether or not abortion is justified. Abortion should always remain justified because there is no moral that gives someone the right in choosing what happens to the a child. Only the mother should be given this absolute right. The abortion “wars” will always continue because there will always be a mother somewhere that can’t raise her child or go through with giving birth. There will always be cases of incest, rape, or health issues that will come into play on deciding if aborting the fetus is a better option in the long run. Until there is a world with no hurt or toil, a woman should always be given these rights to choose what happens to her body no matter the cost. Work Cited: "About the Children." AdoptUSKids. The topic of abortion has hung in the air for a long time, while many people persist on either side of the battle. No one can really come to one conclusion because everyone has a different opinion. I believe that abortion is wrong because you never know what kind of person the baby you are aborting will grow up to be. It’s also not fair to the baby, it’s like taking someone into court and giving them the death penalty because someone said they did something, but it isn’t proven with any evidence. I believe that abortion should not be allowed in the U.S. and the mother should live with the confidence.
